With Great Mill Overview

With Great Mill sits tucked just off Podmłyńska, a stone‑laden corner that feels like a secret waiting to be shared with a friend. The building itself is a charming 1940s façade, the kind of place that whispers stories into your ears as soon as you step inside. I remember the first time I walked in, the smell of fresh coffee and old paper mingling in the lobby—an almost nostalgic scent that made me feel like I’d stepped back into a cozy Gdańsk café I’d only seen in postcards. Honestly, the staff were so welcoming, they instantly put me at ease, and the front desk was open 24 hours, which is a lifesaver if you’re a night owl or a jet‑lagged traveler.

After checking in, I found the parking situation surprisingly straightforward. There’s a small, well‑lit lot right behind the building, not far from the main street, and it’s usually free—though during peak summer months you might have to circle the block a few times. If you prefer street parking, the narrow lanes of Podmłyńska are a maze, but the locals know the tricks—just keep an eye on the meter signs and the occasional “no parking after 8 PM” notices. (I once got a ticket because I didn’t notice the sign, so that’s a lesson learned.) The noise level is pretty low; the only hum you hear is the distant clatter of the harbor ferry, which is oddly soothing. The room itself was a clean, airy space with a window that frames the old town like a living postcard. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, and the ensuite had that soft, velvety bathroom feel that makes you want to linger before the day’s adventures.

When I stepped outside to explore, the first thing that struck me was the proximity to the streets that locals call the “heart” of Gdańsk—Stary Rynek, Dworcowa, and the winding alleys that lead straight to the beach. A quick walk, about a 15‑minute stroll, takes you past the iconic Amber Museum and the historic Crane, and if you’re lucky, you can catch the sunrise over the Motława River. I love that it’s just a stone’s throw from the old city walls, which makes for a perfect afternoon wander without the hassle of a bus ride. Dinner recommendations? The little trattoria on Struga Street—just a block away—serves the best pierogi I’ve ever tasted, and the bartender there knows how to craft a perfect vodka martini. I also found out that the hotel’s rooftop terrace, though a bit of a climb, offers an unbeatable view of the night skyline, especially during the quieter winter months when the city lights are less dazzling but more intimate.

Honestly, my stay at With Great Mill felt like a home away from home. The 4‑star rating of 9.3 is no exaggeration; it’s the kind of spot where the little details—hand‑written welcome notes, a free bottle of local wine, and a small library of Polish literature—make all the difference. I did notice that the Wi‑Fi can be spotty at night, but that’s a minor quibble compared to the overall experience. The only thing I’d suggest to future guests is to book a room with a view early, because the ones facing the street get a little bustle from the local cafés that can be both charming and noisy. But hey, that’s all part of the Gdańsk vibe, right? If you’re planning a trip and want a place that’s genuinely in sync with the city’s rhythm, With Great Mill is the spot to call. The staff, the location, and the little touches—everything feels authentic, and you’ll walk away with a story you’ll want to share at your next gathering.

Great apartment, centrally situated with everything one could possibly need and beautiful paintings and graphics on the walls showing the old Gdansk's architectural treasures one still can see around the corner from the apartment.

What could be improved: Can't think of anything

  • Anna from Germany – 20 July 2024 (9/10)

Very nice and cosy apartment in a great location to explore the city. 10 minutes walk from the train station and right outside of the old town. Very helpful and friendly host.
We can definitely recommend this apartment!

What could be improved: The apartment is situated on the 2nd floor without elevator. The host was nice to help us to carry the suitcase up, though.

Location is great, not exactly in all the hustle and bustle of the Old Town, but less than 10 minutes walk. Great contact with the owner. The place was clean, spacious and really comfortable for 4 people to live in.

    Location was perfect

  • Vitol from United States – 6 July 2023 (10/10)

The location was was incredibly convenient, walking distance from both old town and the train station. The unit was well appointed, well maintained, very comfortable, and finally (for us entitled yanks) the air conditioning worked very well. Most of all Roman was an incredible and gracious host, meeting us in person and proudly displaying his apartment. It was clear that he takes great pride in the unit. We had a fantastic stay and would definitely stay there again the next time.

What could be improved: There were some minor maintenance items that did not bother us, but items that truly persnickety travelers may find annoying.

  • Sebastián from Poland – 21 June 2023 (10/10)
