VIU Old Town Terrace Overview

VIU Old Town Terrace tucked into the cobblestones of 68 Świętego Ducha feels like a secret you’re meant to share with a friend. I hooked up with a local guide who said the hotel’s best feature is the view of the Motława River from the terrace—sunset over the Old Town’s medieval towers is literally a postcard you can taste the salt in the air. The building itself is a converted tenement, so the rooms keep that 19th‑century charm: exposed brick, a wooden beam in the living area, and a small balcony that somehow makes you feel like you’re on the edge of the city. Honestly, the first time I walked in, the staff greeted me with a warm smile and handed me a handwritten itinerary of must‑see spots that felt more like insider tips than a generic brochure.

I’m going to keep the rest of this in the voice of a traveler who’s been to the same corner of Gdańsk twice. VIU Old Town Terrace is right on Świętego Ducha, just a stone’s throw from Dluga Street where the market stalls buzz with vendors selling pierogi and the scent of fresh bread. I remember walking down Dluga and hearing the clink of glasses from a nearby bistro that’s actually a family‑owned place; they serve a stew that’s so rich, you can hear the broth simmering in your ears. The hotel’s proximity to St. Mary’s Church means mornings are a bit noisy—church bells ring at 8 am—but the rooms themselves are surprisingly insulated from the street chatter, thanks to double‑glazed windows and a good set of curtains. Parking is a bit of a hustle; the street around the hotel is a maze of narrow lanes, so if you’re driving you’ll need to be patient. There’s a small garage a block away that charges a few euros per day, which is cheaper than the tourist spots a few streets over.

The check‑in experience was oddly relaxed. The front desk clerk—she was dressed in a traditional blue scarf that’s a nod to the city’s maritime heritage—asked for ID and then gave me a quick tour of the building, pointing out that the rooftop is for guests only, so no rooftop bar for me. They were ready to accommodate an early check‑in on the 14th of July, which was a lifesaver because the summer heat is a different beast and you want to rest before a day of exploring. They also warned me about the noise from the nearby parking lot at night; the heavy trucks can rattle the floorboards, but that’s a small price to pay for being so close to the Old Town’s nightlife. I did notice that the Wi‑Fi, while decent, can drop during peak tourist season—so if you’re a digital nomad, you might want to plan your work around the lunch hour.

If I were to give this place a rating, I’d say it’s a solid 8.8. The real charm is in the little things: a complimentary bottle of local beer at the lobby bar, a handwritten note in the room about the best pierogi shop three blocks away, and a small library of guidebooks that cover more than just the tourist spots. The only thing that could get better would be a clearer sign for the parking garage and perhaps a bit more soundproofing for the rooms that face the street. But honestly, that’s almost a selling point. It’s a place that feels lived-in, not sold out. If you’re looking for a spot that feels like you’re part of the city’s everyday rhythm rather than a tourist bubble, VIU Old Town Terrace is the one that makes you want to stay longer and just keep walking into the next corner. The next time I visit, I’ll probably try the local craft beer on the terrace and watch the sunset over the river while sipping on a glass of white wine—because that’s what Gdańsk is all about, in the end.

Travelers should reserve a hotel in Gdansk at least two months ahead for major events like St. Dominic’s Fair, ensuring the best rates and prime locations near historic attractions.

Reviews of VIU Old Town Terrace

  • Agata from Singapore – 8 June 2025 (7/10)

    Location, modern apartment design, terrace

What could be improved: Bathroom needs some touch up and the terrace was not clean. No basic toiletries, no tea, coffee. For this amount of money I would expect a little bit more hospitality.

  • Karyna from Norway – 9 March 2025 (9/10)

It was really nice located, everything that we needed was in the apartment.

What could be improved: – veranda door was opening with some troubles.

  • Radzhab from United Arab Emirates – 8 February 2025 (8/10)

Amazing location, no smell from the ground floor cafes, very good and welcoming host. Actually, great apartments in you don't mind about woodlices

What could be improved: Woodlices or silverfishes in the bathroom. Owner definitely has to fix the holes in the bathroom, it will make this apartments much better. Also there are lack of sun, it's just not a sun side, but actually it's not a big issue

  • Katarzyna from Poland – 30 January 2025 (9/10)

Warunki w mieszkaniu na wysokim poziomie, ponieważ jest wszystko, czego potrzeba do codziennego funkcjonowania: lodówka, kuchenka, zmywarka, telewizor, pralka…..I wszystko w nowoczesnym stylu. Dodatkowa pościel i ręczniki. Świetna lokalizacja, ponieważ bardzo blisko są sklepy, restauracje i atrakcje. Blisko znajduje się dworzec. Miejsce ciche i spokojne. Poza tym rewelacyjny kontakt z właścicielem:) Polecam. Jeśli nadarzy się okazja, to również będę chciała wrócić w to miejsce.

What could be improved: Minusem było brak w wyposażeniu kuchennym małych łyżeczek;)
