Old Town by Welcome Apartment Overview

Just stepped out of Old Town by Welcome Apartment on a crisp November evening, and I swear I could taste the history in the air. The building itself sits on ul. Tandeta 1, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Gdańsk Crane and the maze of cobblestones that lead to St. Mary’s Church. The lobby is surprisingly warm—think soft lighting, a few vintage postcards on the wall, and a barista who knows how to pull a perfect espresso. Check‑in was quick; the front desk clerk, Marta, greeted us in both Polish and English, and she even slipped us a map of the old quarter with her own handwritten notes on the best pierogi spots. Parking is a bit of a scavenger hunt—you’ll have to hunt for a street spot, but the city’s parking app makes it manageable. The only downside is the late‑night traffic noise; the street below can turn into a honking orchestra after midnight, so I’d recommend an extra pair of earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

After that, we were led up to our unit. The apartment is a cozy 1‑bedroom loft with a kitchenette that actually feels functional—there’s a kettle, a small fridge, and a set of non‑stick pans that would make any traveler feel at home. The bed is surprisingly plush, and the blackout curtains do a good job of shutting out the city’s glow. The apartment is just a few minutes’ walk to ul. Długa, where locals grab breakfast at a café that serves the best cinnamon rolls in town. On the morning of our second day, we took a leisurely stroll to the Motława River and caught a sunrise that painted the sky in hues of pink and amber—something that’s hard to find in a tourist brochure. The Wi‑Fi is decent, but I did notice a hiccup when streaming a movie on a rainy afternoon; the connection flickered a few times, so if you’re a heavy downloader, maybe consider a mobile hotspot. The only thing I’d say is that the bathroom could use a touch of modernization; the tiles are a bit outdated, but the shower still does its job well.

By the third day, the city’s rhythm had settled into a comfortable hum. The area is quieter after 10 pm, which is perfect for a post‑dinner walk along the river. I ran into a local baker on ul. Płocka who offered us a sample of freshly baked rye bread—talk about a taste of Gdańsk. The apartment’s location meant we didn’t have to chase the public transit; the tram stop is just a five‑minute walk, and the city’s historic tram lines feel like a throwback ride. The staff at Old Town by Welcome Apartment were friendly enough to give us a secret tip: the best view of the city skyline is from the rooftop terrace of the neighboring building, but only at sunset when the shadows play over the rooftops. Overall, the place nails the balance between comfort and authenticity, and its 8.9 rating is no surprise. If you’re planning a trip to Gdańsk and want a home base that feels like a local’s choice rather than a generic hotel, this spot is a solid pick. Its 4‑star status is earned, not just a label, and the little details—like a handwritten map, a friendly staff, and a tastefully renovated apartment—make it worth the stay. The only thing you might miss is a bit more noise control if you’re sensitive to the city’s nighttime buzz, but honestly, that’s part of the charm of staying in the heart of this historic town.

Hotel in Gdansk booking should be done early, especially during summer festivals when the city hosts internationally celebrated cultural and maritime events.

Reviews of Old Town by Welcome Apartment

  • Robert from United Kingdom – 9 June 2025 (8/10)

Excellent location in Old Town close to river and a short walk to many bars/restaurants and shops.

What could be improved: Lack of a fixed shower. There is a shower mixer fitted to the bath taps but it is only possible to use by sitting in the bath.

    Great location.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Emma from United Kingdom – 27 February 2025 (9/10)

Beautiful central apartment. Has everything you need right in the heart of the old town. Large Balcony facing the main street with beautiful views. Smart TV and good wifi

  • Maria from Cyprus – 22 January 2025 (9/10)

Apartment has everything you could possibly need. Very atmospheric place in the old town with easy access to old town sights and museums. Christmas market (seasonal of course) and a shopping mall (Forum), as well as main train and bus stations, are all within walking distance through beautiful stone pavements of the Old town Gdansk.

Right next to the apartment there is a supermarket and multiple cafes. Office of the host (Welcome apartments) is also located downstairs.

We have stopped by the office of the host to extend our stay and discuss a few things, as well as just to wait for our taxi inside a warm comfortable space. The lady greeting us was nothing short of extraordinary in terms of hospitality and kindness. We felt very welcome, and we were also provided with lots of useful information.

What could be improved: As it was late in the night we picked up the keys from the guard which has no relation to the host. He mislead us saying we had to take the stairs to access the complex, it was quite a long steep flight for someone with 5 suitcases. Eventually, we found out there was an elevator behind the guard's office. The guard also doesn't speak English. Hardly a complaint though as the guard is not an employee of the host.

  • Gabriela from Slovakia – 19 January 2025 (9/10)

We arrived at 01:30 at night one hour later than originally planned. The security guard kept an envelope for us with the key. The flat was well-equipped, with a separate bedroom for us, parents, and a huge comfortable sofa for our teenage daughter. The flat was centrally located, but still very quiet. There is a very nice Italian restaurant just round the corner, as well as a wonderful café called Umam with pistacio croissants that are out of this world! Highly recommend, would come back again without hesitation.

What could be improved: Nothing at all!
