Dom & House – Old Town Waterlane Overview

Dom & House – Old Town Waterlane sits right on the cobblestone stretch of Dluga Street, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Motława River promenade. I arrived on a rainy Tuesday in late spring, and the first thing I noticed was how the rain seemed to wash the city clean—fresh, almost medicinal. The façade is a charming mix of brick and glass that feels like it could be straight out of a 19th‑century postcard, but the lobby is a surprisingly modern, airy space with a few local artists’ murals that give it character. Checking in was a breeze: the front desk staff were friendly and spoke a little English, which is always a relief in a city where you’re rarely sure if you’ll get along with a stranger. They handed me a keycard that glows a faint teal—cool touch. (I mean, it’s a small detail, but it stuck with me.)

The rooms themselves are modestly spacious, with a clean, minimalist aesthetic that somehow feels cozy. The bed was a decent size, and the linens had that subtle, fresh scent of linen detergent that you don’t usually find in a hotel. I was pleasantly surprised by the soundproofing; the only noise I caught was the distant hum of the city and a faint river rush from the street below, which is definitely a plus if you’re not a light sleeper. Parking is a bit of a hassle—there’s no dedicated garage, so you have to rely on street parking, but the city’s parking meter system is straightforward, and I parked with no issues. The hotel’s location is unbeatable for exploring Gdańsk’s Old Town. From the lobby, you can step out onto Dluga Street and wander past the bustling fish market, the iconic St. Mary’s Church, and the charming cafés that line the waterfront. I took a quick pause at a little café on Śródmieście Street for a latte; the barista knew my name (I told her it was my first time in Gdańsk), which made the experience feel personal.

Dining at Dom & House was a highlight. The breakfast spread was simple but thoughtfully curated—fresh bread, locally sourced butter, a selection of cheeses from the nearby Szczecin dairy, and a tea made from herbs grown in the city’s botanical garden. For dinner, I opted for the small, intimate restaurant on the second floor. The menu was a blend of Polish classics and modern twists, and the chef’s pierogi were a revelation—fluffy dough stuffed with mushroom and onion, served with a dollop of sour cream that had this earthy, umami depth. The bar on the roof is a hidden gem; you can sip a glass of amber amber or a crisp white while watching the sunset over the Motława, and the staff will casually recommend a glass of Piwnica’s best vintage. (I mean, it felt like being part of a local secret, which is exactly the vibe I was after.) All in all, Dom & House feels like a home away from home for anyone wanting to experience Gdańsk without the tourist crowds, with a touch of authenticity that only a place that truly knows its streets can offer.

Reviews of Dom & House – Old Town Waterlane

  • Kemal from Poland – 8 June 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: It’s really unreasonable that the municipality doesn’t provide the location information online before you make the tax payment. It’s a waste of time, and you can’t even pay at the desk. Also, the place where you pick up the key is quite far (15 minutes Walk )from the actual hotel. You have to go there first, which is very inconvenient.
