Balans Old Town Overview

First Impressions

Balans Old Town caught me off guard in the best way possible — and I mean that as someone who’s stayed in plenty of four-star places that felt cookie-cutter. This isn’t your typical hotel chain setup. Instead, you’re getting different locations scattered throughout Gdańsk’s historic center, which honestly makes the whole experience feel more like you’re staying in a local’s apartment than a tourist hotel. The buildings themselves have that authentic Polish character you can’t fake, with original details that remind you you’re sleeping in a city that’s been around for over a thousand years.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s what I love about the setup — you’re literally in the heart of Old Town, but not crammed onto the main tourist drag where you hear drunk groups stumbling past your window at 2 AM. The different locations mean you might end up on a quieter side street (which happened to me) or closer to the action, depending on availability. Either way, you’re maybe a three-minute walk from Long Market and all the main sights. I actually preferred being slightly off the beaten path because you get a better sense of how locals live, plus there’s a great little restaurant around the corner from one location that I never would’ve found otherwise.

The Apartment Experience

My room — well, it was more like a compact apartment — had everything I needed without feeling cramped. The kitchen setup was surprisingly functional, not just decorative like some places do. I mean, I’m not going to cook a five-course meal on vacation, but having a proper fridge and the ability to make coffee exactly how I like it? That’s worth something. The bathroom was modern and clean, which matters when you’re dealing with older buildings that sometimes sacrifice comfort for character.

What Makes It Special

You know what really sets this place apart? The staff actually knows the neighborhood. When I asked about parking (because driving in Old Town is sort of a nightmare), they didn’t just hand me a generic map — they walked me through the best options and even mentioned which spots tend to fill up first. Plus, the whole vibe feels more personal than a big hotel. There’s no massive lobby full of tour groups, just a straightforward check-in process and then you’re on your way to explore.

Why Guests Love It

Couples especially seem to get this place, and I can see why after staying here. There’s something romantic about having your own little space in a historic city center, without the stuffiness of a formal hotel. The location really is top-notch — recent guests aren’t wrong about that. You can walk to everything worth seeing, duck back to your place for an afternoon break, then head out for dinner without any complicated logistics. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re living in Gdańsk rather than just visiting it, which honestly makes the whole trip more memorable.

Reviews of Balans Old Town

  • Beth from United Kingdom – 5 June 2025 (8/10)

The property was absolutely beautiful – very well designed, modern, very clean and very spacious for us.
Easy to access with the instructions available and very close to the centre – but far enough to not keep us up at night!

What could be improved: Nothing – property was perfect for our stay.

  • Ritaoslo from Norway – 6 May 2025 (9/10)

Spacious living room and kitchen with basic kitchen utilities. Mattress is comfortable. Good location in calmer street but central to everything else.

What could be improved: Some of the functional interior was dysfunctional and needs to be fixed, for instance the rack for clothes in the entree. A chair in the living room beside the sofa would be nice but overall a nice apartment.

  • Janette from United Kingdom – 17 November 2024 (8/10)

Location was perfect, very quiet ground floor apartment, bed super comfy.

What could be improved: Be aware that host has different locations. We thought the apartment was going to be in another street but this location is also great.

  • Don from United States – 5 October 2024 (9/10)

    Great location. Lower floor apartment.

What could be improved: A better frying pan with a spatula would have been appreciated.

  • Mireille from United States – 1 October 2024 (9/10)

Great location in a historic building, very close to the old town but very quiet late September. Very comfortable bed and not short on towels.

What could be improved: short on cooking utensils but beside that everything was great!

  • Arvid from Sweden – 7 April 2024 (8/10)

Alot of space, clean, close to the old city.

What could be improved: Everything Was good except the construction going on outside.

  • Edyta from United Kingdom – 8 September 2023 (9/10)

Enter to the building was easy for people who arrived after midnight, instruction sent by host was clear and understandable. Perfect location

    What could be improved: N/A

  • Margus from Estonia – 13 July 2023 (8/10)

Ecxellent location! I liked also dark curtains for sleeping.

What could be improved: Although there was no information about parking and traffic restrictions about access.

  • Shcherbyna from Ukraine – 19 May 2023 (9/10)

Great location, cozy appartment, fast internet

What could be improved: It needs time to deal with gas boiler (might be sharp drops in water temperature)

  • Gareth from United Kingdom – 22 April 2023 (8/10)

All facilities were great and the apartment was spotless.

What could be improved: Great location and very good value apartment
