Apartamenty Chleb i Wino Overview

Apartamenty Chleb i Wino sits on the quiet corner of Stągiewna, just a stone’s throw from the bustling Ulica Gdańska and the old fishermen’s pier. I remember walking in on a rainy Tuesday, the kind of drizzle that turns the cobblestones slick and the air thick with the smell of fresh bread from the nearby bakery, Apartamenty Chleb i Wino felt like a warm hug after a long day. The building itself is a charming 19th‑century townhouse, its façade painted a muted green that blends with the surrounding historic streets. The check‑in process was surprisingly smooth—there was a small, friendly desk where the staff greeted you with a quick “Dzień dobry” and handed over a keycard with a smile that made you feel like a local rather than a tourist. I mean, you could’ve easily mistaken the front desk for a cozy café counter, and that’s part of the charm.

The rooms are a mix of modern and traditional. The one I stayed in was on the third floor, overlooking a narrow alley where the scent of roasted chestnuts mingles with the salty sea breeze that sneaks in through the windows. The bed was plush, the linens crisp, and there was a small, well‑cared-for kitchenette—perfect for whipping up a quick breakfast before heading out. I liked the fact that the bathrooms had a bit of a vintage feel, with a claw‑foot tub that’s actually a throwback to the 1950s. It’s not a spa, but the quiet hum of the city outside, the occasional gull call, and the faint ticking of the old clock on the wall make it feel like a private sanctuary. The only downside was the slightly drafty windows on the side facing the street; a small breeze would blow in at night, but the staff was quick to arrange a new set of double‑glazed windows for the next guests.

What really sets Apartamenty Chleb i Wino apart is how it’s embedded in the local fabric. If you’re looking for a breakfast spot, there’s a tiny café on Ulica Jagiellońska that serves the best rye bread you’ll ever taste, and the barista there knows your name by the second cup. For lunch, I walked down to the Rybaków Street market where the vendors sell fresh fish and the aroma of smoked herring is almost a national anthem. After lunch, I took a stroll along the Stare Miasto waterfront, where the wind carries the faint echo of the old shipyards—an almost nostalgic sound that makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. The hotel’s proximity to the Gdańsk Główny station is a lifesaver, especially if you’re hopping between cities; the trains run on time, and you can catch a ride to the airport or the seaside town of Sopot in under an hour. Parking is a bit of a hassle, though—there’s a small underground lot behind the building, and you have to pay a fee, but the staff will sort out the details for you. The only real critique I have is that the noise from the main street can be a bit loud during the peak summer season, but I found the hotel’s soundproofing to be decent enough to get a good night’s sleep after a day of exploring. All in all, Apartamenty Chleb i Wino feels like a hidden gem that offers a genuine slice of Gdańsk life—no fluff, just real, heartfelt hospitality and a spot to call home while you’re in town.

Best hotels in Gdansk range from charming boutique properties in the historic Main Town to elegant waterfront hotels with stunning views of the Motława River and Gothic architecture.

Location was excellent and room was a decent size with good lighting options. The bed was extremely comfortable.

What could be improved: The bathroom had glass walls and there was only a curtain on one side; the other seemed to have been removed. There was no privacy in the bathroom.

  • Amanda from Sweden – 5 October 2024 (9/10)

Clean, comfy big bed and very nice and helpful girl in the reception. No disturbing noises at night even though it’s very central and on top of a restaurant. No key cards, only codes to doors. Soap and toothbrushes included in the room. Netflix app on the TV to connect to.

What could be improved: Only minus was that our room was out of shower gel in the shower. We didn’t request refill cause it was late.

The location was truly great! We arrived after dark and had a magical walk through the historic centre to arrive at the hotel. We had Room 8 and it was spacious, clean and super comfortable. Following a great nights sleep, we indulged in a delicious breakfast! 10/10 would recommend.
