Anchor Old Town Bastion I Overview
When I finally checked into Anchor Old Town Bastion I, I felt like I’d hit the jackpot – no, seriously, the front desk was a blast of warmth and a couple of friendly Polish jokes that instantly put me at ease. The staff seemed genuinely interested in making sure I had a smooth stay; they handed me a small keychain with a miniature anchor, a cheeky nod to the hotel’s nautical vibe, and a handwritten note about the best coffee spots on Anchor Old Town Bastion I’s street. I was told the check‑in was quick – no long queues at the big hotel chains – and the lobby had this eclectic mix of old‑world charm and modern art, which I found oddly comforting.
The room itself was a cozy, well‑lit space that felt more like a boutique apartment than a standard hotel suite. The bed was supremely comfortable; I slept through the late‑night city chatter from the street below, which was oddly soothing. The bathroom was a small, tasteful oasis – the shower had a good water pressure and a nice exfoliating scrub, which is a rare find in this part of town. I appreciated the small touches, like a local map pinned on the fridge, a mini‑fridge stocked with bottled water, and a collection of fresh‑baked croissants that arrived each morning. The Wi‑Fi was fast, but the signal seemed to dip a bit when the subway opened a few minutes after midnight. Still, the overall experience was solid. I also found the noise level to be pretty low – the only sounds were the occasional church bells from St. Mary’s near Anchor Old Town Bastion I and the distant traffic from the nearby Gdańsk Town Hall, which didn’t disturb the peace.
Now, the location is the real star. Anchor Old Town Bastion I sits just a stone’s throw from the historic Old Town, so I was able to walk to the Royal Castle, the Neptune Fountain, and the bustling Hala Główna with ease. The street itself, Wałowa 23C, is lined with charming cafés and some of the best pierogi spots I’ve ever tasted. I mean, the one on Spicher Street is a must‑try – the savory cheese and mushroom pierogi are heavenly. The hotel’s parking is a bit of a mixed bag: there’s a paid underground lot nearby, but it’s usually crowded during the summer months. I parked in a shared space on Wiki Street – it was a quick 10‑minute walk to the lobby, which was a good compromise. As for the noise, it’s best to book a room on the quieter side of the hotel, especially if you’re a light sleeper – the main street can get lively after 10 pm. I also found that the hotel’s breakfast bar was a good spot to chat with locals; I met a few fellow travelers and even got a few insider tips on the best winter markets.
In terms of practicalities, the hotel’s policies were straightforward. Check‑out was at 11 am, and they offered a shuttle to the nearest train station for a small fee, which is handy if you’re on a tight schedule. I didn’t notice any hidden fees – everything was clearly listed on the website, which made the whole experience feel trustworthy. The staff even helped me arrange a late‑night taxi to the airport, which was super convenient. I’d say the only critique is that the room’s closet had a bit of a damp smell, but it wasn’t a big deal and didn’t affect my stay.
Overall, whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just someone looking for a comfortable spot to unwind after a day of exploring, Anchor Old Town Bastion I offers a genuine, relaxed vibe that feels like a home away from home. The combination of location, thoughtful touches, and friendly service make it a top pick for anyone wanting to soak up the charm of Gdańsk without the usual hotel hassle. And honestly, if you’re planning a trip to this part of Poland, you’ll want to add it to your itinerary – it’s the kind of place that turns a good trip into a great one.
