Amber Overview

When I first stepped onto the cobbled street of Amber, the city of Gdańsk felt like a place that had just woken up from a long, beautiful nap. The building itself looks like a slice of modern history, a glass-and-steel façade that somehow feels like it’s been there for years. Check‑in is a breeze – the front desk is open 24/7, and the staff greet you with a warm, almost personal touch; they’re quick with directions to the nearest tram stop, which is a good 10‑minute walk to St. Mary’s Church. The lobby smells faintly of fresh coffee and the salty sea breeze that practically drifts in from the Motława River—there’s a subtle, almost imperceptible scent of old stone and new paint that makes the whole place feel lived-in and inviting. Parking is a bit of a hassle: there’s a small underground garage, but it costs a decent amount, so if you’re on a tight budget, you might want to park on the street instead – just watch for the nightly parking restrictions, or you’ll end up with a fine. Honestly, the noise level is surprisingly low for a city center; the only sounds you hear are the distant chatter of tourists and the occasional gull cry.
The rooms themselves are a blend of minimalist chic and cozy touches. I booked a standard double, and it was spacious enough to stretch out after a long day of exploring. The bed was incredibly comfortable – someone had chosen a mattress that actually made you want to stay in bed, even though you’re in a hotel. I noticed a small, slightly outdated wallpaper motif that reminded me of the old Polish folk art, which added a bit of character to the space. The bathroom had a good shower, though the water pressure was a tad weak at first, but that’s not a deal‑breaker. Wi‑Fi is decent, though I did experience a brief drop in signal when the building’s server got overloaded because of a local festival. The minibar was well-stocked, but the prices were a bit steep for the standard hotel fare. The room’s view? If you’re lucky enough to have a balcony, you’ll see the bustling street market on the corner of Kazimierza Wielkiego Street, where vendors shout about fresh pierogi and fresh fish, and the smell of frying onions lingers in the air.
Speaking of the market, the location of Amber is a dream for locals and tourists alike. Within a ten‑minute stroll, you hit the Old Town’s winding lanes, the grand Gdańsk Main Square, and the iconic St. Mary’s Church. If you’re into history, the nearby Museum of the Second World War is a must‑visit, and the shipyard where the famous Gdańsk Shipyard protests began is just a short tram ride away. For a more relaxed vibe, head to the waterfront promenade by the Motława – you’ll find people sipping coffee while watching the boats drift by. I also recommend a quick detour to the little café on Staszica Street, where you can try local baked goods and get a real taste of the city’s culinary scene. The only downside is that the hotel is slightly noisy on Friday nights when the city’s nightlife kicks in, but the staff did a good job of keeping the room quiet with a nice set of white‑noise speakers. Overall, the experience at Amber is genuinely warm, a little quirky, and well worth the price, especially if you value an authentic slice of Gdańsk life over a generic luxury feel. The rating of 9.7 feels justified – it’s the kind of place that makes you feel at home, even when you’re just passing through. It’s a solid choice for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the city’s rhythm without compromising on comfort.

Must be the cleanest place I’ve ever been to. Looks like has just been Newley renovated and decorated. Spotless! Also very close to tram line which is only 20min into the main town.

What could be improved: Not got anything negative to say. Ideal for a solo traveller or a couple.
